Thanks to the past maps that we have achieved, we can compare the past with the present and predict the future.
In the past, a lot of the things that nowadays are built and urbanized were croplands. This shows that the society of about a hundred years ago was very rural. Of the two places that we have chosen, one was a town full of farmhouses (Gurb) and the other one was a tiny town surrounded by fields and farms. In this town all the factories were located in a strategic place, like by the rivers or next to the roads. At the moment, the factories are located away from the urban nucleus, in industrial estates.
The current society has evolved up to a point where we very little rural, and we are becoming less and less rural. This evolution has strengthened recently with the real estate bubble. Thanks to that, we can predict that, if there isn’t a big change, everything will be urbanized, and, if this situation continues, in one hundred years, the city of Vic will have grown by 150%.
Another effect that will modify the society of the future is the climate change. This will cause many train tracks to be replaced by more eco-friendly trains. The climate change will also cause the new buildings to be designed to take full advantage of renewable energies. In spite of the pollution, the factories won’t stop growing. A lot of them will change to renewable energies, but the others will continue using oil. However, thanks to the technology revolution, nobody will work in the factories. Instead, everybody will work at home using the Internet. In the future, the location of the factories won’t change very much. The present industrial zone, “Mas Gali”, will grow considerably in size, and the industrial zone “Les Casasses” won’t change. The industrial zone “el Burger”, which is relatively new, will grow too, and near that there will be a new industrial zone named “poligon de la Moda”, oriented to all the factories of the textile industry, like Inditex or Mango.
